Ending date: 12 Dec 2017

This course is aimed at development practitioners working in the field of children’s rights who are planning or considering undertaking an analysis of the situation of children’s rights. The course will enable participants to understand the concepts and principles of human rights/children’s rights and their application in the production of an analysis of the degree to which children realise their rights and the factors and obstacles that prevent them. Participants will consider strategies and practical approaches appropriate to their own CRSA needs and will have the opportunity through individual and group assignments to practice the use of rights based analysis tools and to consider the practical challenges in planning and managing a CRSA process.

Programming to improve the realisation of children rights should be based on an analysis of the existing situation of their rights, of the barriers and obstacles to their realisation and an understanding of the roles, actual and potential, of a range of key stakeholders. Over the past decade a number of agencies have developed methodologies and guidelines to assist in designing and undertaking “child rights situation analyses”. These share a core framework of human rights orientated analysis and process, differing in their application according to the nature of the agencies mandate/core work areas.

This course is aimed at development practitioners who are considering or planning to undertake a child rights situation analysis to inform programme planning. It aims to build an in-depth knowledge of the concepts and theory applicable to this component of the rights based project/programme cycle and explore the use of practical, child rights based tools and strategies. A participant successfully completing this course will be in a position to make the most out of their own organisation’s CRSA process, bringing both a sound appreciation of the concepts and principles underpinning a child rights based analysis and able to contribute to the design and implementation of the process.
